I ended up with this, but I don’t especially like it:

SMSTEXT=`echo $MSGTEXT | lynx --dump --dont_wrap_pre -stdin  |sed -e 's/^   //' |sed -e 's/[-=_]//g'| tr '\n' ' '  | cut -c1-140`
